Low-light plants safe for cats are rarer than the shelf suggests: every plant below is graded S0 Safe for cats against ASPCA or Pet Poison Helpline records and tolerates medium to low light on our care notes — while the plants most often sold for dim corners, pothos, heartleaf philodendron, dracaena, and peace lily, are all S2 Irritant. That is why this list is three plants long. We grade toxicity from sources and record light as a care note, not a promise: "medium light" here means the plant is commonly kept away from a bright window, not that it thrives in darkness. The six dim-corner favourites that are not safe are covered further down.
Almost every plant marketed for low light is on the wrong side of this list. Pothos, heartleaf philodendron, and peace lily are S2 Irritant on insoluble calcium oxalates that burn the mouth; dracaena — including lucky bamboo — is S2 on saponins with a wobbly gait reported in cats. Snake plant and English ivy are milder, S1 Caution, but still not S0. Dim light does not make a plant safe.
