Plants / Sago Palm / cats

Is sago palm toxic to cats?

Sago palm is life-threatening to cats (S4 Emergency): every part of the plant — the seeds most of all — contains cycasin, and any amount can cause liver failure and death, with symptoms sometimes delayed for hours.

  • TOXINcycasin
  • WHAT TO EXPECTvomiting, diarrhea, bloody vomitus; melena (dark, tarry stool); increased thirst
  • CALL THE VETImmediately, on any ingestion — there is no safe wait-and-see window. Even a symptom-free cat needs veterinary assessment after sago palm exposure, because liver failure can be delayed by days.

S4 PROTOCOL
1
This is an emergency. If your cat has chewed or swallowed any part of a sago palm — a seed above all — go to a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately. Do not wait for symptoms: your cat can look fine for hours while liver damage develops, and delayed signs can surface up to 48–72 hours later. Bring a photo or piece of the plant.
2
When to call the vet: Immediately, on any ingestion — there is no safe wait-and-see window. Even a symptom-free cat needs veterinary assessment after sago palm exposure, because liver failure can be delayed by days.
